“Books are not intrinsically bad just because some use them to publish offensive/heretical material. The internet is not intrinsically bad just because some use it to watch pornography. Twitter is not intrinsically bad just because some people use it to say what they having for lunch.” Comment by Barry from Cardiff, UK on “Politicians Twitter while the Country Burns” (Times Online, 10 March 2009)
I’d add: People are not intrinsically bad just because some people commit horrifying crimes, offend you or are just a pain in the ass.
This comment makes me wonder about the relation between medium and message (Tweets suck so twitter sucks, so twitterers suck?).
If communication goes wrong, don’t just blame it on the medium or the message (if blaming is what you want to do, although I wouldn’t recommend it), let alone on the messenger.
Take this opportunity of misunderstanding to learn something about your partner, about yourself. I find it hard to put that into practice myself, but the alternative hasn’t been very satisfying so far. Too much effort, no great results.
